Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation

This foundation is one that I have been wanting to try for such a long time and for some reason, just never got around to buying it! I recently took the plunge and I purchased the Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation along with their Radiance Viel Primer.

The first time I had heard of this foundation was when I saw a post on Instagram from UK Makeup Artist Krystal Dawson (@krystal_iammakeup on Instagram). If you’re British or alternatively, just a fan of British Soaps and/or Reality Television then you may have heard of her before or you might know some of her clients – Michelle Keegan (Coronation Street), Vicky Pattison (Geordie Shore) and Jessica Wright (The Only Way is Essex) to name a few. She had mentioned that she had used the Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation on Jessica Wright, who’s skin always looks flawless and glowy so naturally I wanted to try it for myself.

My only dilemma was that I couldn’t find anywhere in Western Australia that stocked Illamasqua products and I wasn’t sure how I would go at guessing my colour online. Eventually I discovered that Myer Online sold Illamasqua, so I googled some swatches and guessed my colour because I figured I could always return if it didn’t match as Myer have a great returns policy.

I bought this foundation in the colour 8 based on swatches and it is a pretty perfect colour match for me! I’m usually a 2.2 in Smashbox Studio Skin Foundation and 6.5 in Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation if that helps for reference.

Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation Description (From the Illamasqua Website)

“Our award-winning Skin Base Foundation is the go-to choice to create a flawless complexion every day. This lightweight, easily blendable foundation is suitable for most skin types and smooths, softens and conditions thanks to skin boosting Vitamin C and E. Tested in HD environments, this foundation also provides the ultimate skin realism effect and with 26 shades to choose from, finding your perfect match has never been so easy”.

Tips on Application (From the Illamasqua Website)

“Using the Highlighter Brush, buff Skin Base Foundation onto the skin in light circular motions. Build up layers depending on the desired coverage”.

The foundation is described as a Medium coverage, however, I would say it is a Medium to Full coverage. I find that I don’t use as much product with this foundation as I do my others and I was pleasantly surprised with how much was covered with such little product!

The foundation has a natural to dewey finish and looks really nice in pictures. The first time I wore this foundation, I applied it at around 10am in the morning and it was 11pm that night before I washed it off. The foundation still looked almost identical to the initial application although I could have done with powdering my nose as had started to look a bit oily. You could, however, try using a mattifying primer on your nose/trouble spots to avoid this problem.

Illamasqua Radiance Veil Primer Description (From the Illamasqua Website)

The Illamasqua website describes this product as “Part primer, part illuminator, Radiance Veil enhances make-up wear through its unique velvet crème formula. Key ingredient Vitamin C provides moisturising benefits whilst the fine shimmer particles inject light onto the skin, adding a luminous effect”.

Tips on Application (From the Illamasqua Website)

The website also provides tips on application: “Prior to foundation application, use the spoon provided to apply one scoop of Radiance Veil to the palm of your hand. Using the Highlighter Brush, gently brush the product from your hand and apply all over the face, in small swirling motions. Focus on the highest points of the face and buff until the product is fully absorbed”.

Hint: Radiance Veil can also be mixed with liquid foundation prior to application to customise to a radiant luminous finish.

The radiance veil primer is a great match for this foundation if you’re a fan of dewey/glowy skin. The consistency of this primer is quite thin and it dries rather quickly to allow for instant foundation application. It is visibly shimmery on the skin which can be a bit scary when applying to your face, however, once the foundation has been applied you can’t see any shimmer, it just gives a nice glow.

Overall I would definitely recommend this foundation and primer combination to anyone who likes a medium to full coverage foundation with a dewey finish and I look forward to trying more Illamasqua products in the near future!
